Summary of Position

­­­The Hope Center for College, Community and Justice in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University is seeking a Director of Operations to join our growing team. As a mission-driven organization we take seriously the importance of rigorous research, engagement, communication activities, and advocacy. The Hope Center seeks a Director of Operations who is passionate about addressing structural inequality and racial disparities, and committed to sustaining a team that gets into what John Lewis called “good trouble” on a regular basis.

We are looking for an individual with experience and a strong skill set in team management, human capital development and scaling organizations. The Director of Operations should be prepared to work closely with the Executive Director and the Executive Team to problem-solve, take ownership over operational and strategic initiatives, and “fight fires” where relevant. The Director of Operations will work very closely with the Human Resources teams in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and Temple University to support Hope Center staff. The right candidate will build and oversee the Hope Center’s internal operational procedures to ensure Center goals are achieved, and support and execute the right hiring practices to build a talented and diverse team and the internal practices to support the existing team. This includes sourcing potential candidates, facilitating screening and interviewing, and managing onboarding and professional development. Beyond helping the Hope Center attract the right talent to scale rapidly, this role will help the Center grow and sustain a culture consistent with its values.

Essential Functions

  • Assume primary operational responsibility all human capital and office management.
  • Work with the Executive Director to build a discernible and unique organizational culture that ensures the Hope Center’s core stated values are also lived values and similarly act as a differentiator to attract and retain talent.
  • Help the Hope Center embed best practices around diversity, equity, and inclusion into all facets of our work life.
  • Work cross-functionally with the Director of Finance & Administration to ensure that Hope is financially sustainable.
  • Initiate and maintain operational and human resources-related relationships both internally and externally at LKSOM and at Temple University, by understanding and assessing the Center’s needs, to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Design and update job descriptions, work with LKSOM to list and advertise positions, recruit, screen, and interview candidates, facilitate selection process and hiring.
  • Review and re-design and implement onboarding processes.
  • Provide significant input into and implements selection, termination and performance management, such as: monitoring, assessing and taking corrective action on competency, productivity and performance issues.
  • Provide significant input into and implement performance standards including supporting supervisors in this process and management of position transitions for existing employees in response to performance assessments.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and at least five years of directly-related experience (including operations and human services roles) in nonprofit and/or university settings. At least three years of experience managing teams of three or more.

  • Proven experience managing a variety of HR processes, including hiring and onboarding
  • A demonstrated track record of owning internal and external stakeholder relationships, especially internal relationships across departments when identifying hiring needs
  • A strong work ethic: ability to be self-motivated and take ownership over tasks
  • Adaptability and the ability to multi-task, manage multiple projects, and think creatively
  • Proactive, self-directed mentality with a hunger to learn and a willingness to take on responsibilities sometimes outside of one’s “lane”
  • Ability to communicate, present and influence credibly and effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to rapidly improve inefficient processes
  • Natural relationship-building skills, with a focus on integrity and reliability
  • Expert at Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps (the Hope Center also uses Slack, Asana, and Dropbox)
