Letter to Congress on the Repealing the Tax on Pell Grants

June 27, 2022

Today, The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice (“The Hope Center”) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) sent a letter to Congress, joined by 15 other higher education organizations, calling for the repeal of the taxation of Pell Grants and the drug conviction penalty on the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC).

These current tax policies exacerbate student basic needs insecurity, and bipartisan Members of Congress support their repeal. The letter calls on Congress to maintain these provisions, which were included in the House-passed Build Back Better Act, in any reconciliation vehicle considered this year.
