1 in 10 College Students in Massachusetts are Homeless. More are Hungry. It’s Past Time We Recognize Their Reality

Maricopa County Community College District Report from Fall 2016 Survey of Student Basic Needs

In fall 2016 the Wisconsin HOPE Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), with support from the Kresge Foundation, conducted a large-scale survey to better understand food and housing insecurity among community college students. The effort built on a similar survey of ten community colleges during the 2014-2015 academic year. In total, seventy institutions from twenty-four states participated in the 2016 survey.

Although higher education has become a prerequisite for economic success in Maricopa County, college students themselves often have difficulty accessing sufficient food and housing as they pursue their academic goals. To better understand the challenges faced by community college students in particular, this report presents a profile of 2,665 survey participants in the Maricopa County Community College District.
